Madison County was established February 18, 1913, from a southern portion of
Fremont County. It was named in honor of James Madison, the fourth president of
the United States.
It is located in the southeastern area of Idaho.
Jefferson County, its neighbor to the west, was established the same day, from a
southwestern portion of Fremont County. Bonneville County lies to the south of
Madison County. In 1915, Madison County lost its eastern portion to the creation
of Teton County.
Rexburg is the County Seat.
First settlers in the
county were Mormons from Utah, who built the first irrigation system and the
farms. Water was diverted from the North Fork of the Snake River, the Teton
River, and the main Snake River.
